An Introduction to "Tragic Events"
Everyone goes through a certain level of sorrowful events in their lives, which can overtake an entire group of people or solely affect an individual. These unexpected scenarios can cause the realities of the world to come crashing down upon teenager's lives. Throughout this chapter, the different pieces depict the shocking sensation and devastation people feel when a tragic event occurs. "The Lottery" starts out with the innocence of children playing but near the end, reaches an intense level where a mother dies because of her town’s inability to change tradition. "To a Terrorist" and Guernica describe the intense feelings civilians get when trying to cope with a recent terrorist attack, which caused the deaths of over a thousand innocent civilians. "To a Terrorist" also brings forth the idea of not only surpassing a terrorists actions but also stopping terrorism from reoccurring. Both modern day songs, "If I Die Young" and "Dance in the Graveyards," concern death of a loved one and view the situation in a positive light. Through each piece, the reader will experience an emotional journey ending with the knowledge of how to understand and conquer the negativity attached to tragic events. NAS
