Blackfriars Playhouse
The American Shakespeare Center (ASC), also known as Blackfriars Playhouse, is an internationally acclaimed company that performs William Shakespeare's romantic, comedic, tragic, and historical plays in their original stage conditions. The stage is as simple as their sets, and the lights remain on at all times. Audience members have the chance to sit onstage for actors to interact with them, and 300 seats are available in the house. The ASC is the only re-creation of Shakespeare's original indoor theater, making the scenery just as educational as the plays are. What Shows are Running at the Blackfriars Playhouse?
The Blackfriars Playhouse is currently in its 2013 Spring Season, performing three plays: Twelfth Night, The Duchess of Malfi, and Love's Labour's Lost. Summaries and show times for each show can be found below:
Twelfth NightShakespeare’s play follows the shipwrecked Viola on the kingdom of Illyria, where she dresses as a man to get a job from the Duke Orsino. She falls in love with the Duke, but he loves Lady Olivia who refuses all marriage requests while mourning for her brother; however, when Viola is sent to give Olivia the Duke’s love, Olivia believes her disguise as a male and falls in love with her. Hilarity, romance, and insanity ensues in one of Shakespeare’s best comedies. RLS

Love's Labour's LostIn Love’s Labour’s Lost, the King of Navarre and his three attendants swear off women for a year to pursue their studies; however, the Princess of France arrives with her three ladies, and the men instantly fall in love. The story also has a sub-plot with a troupe trying to win the love of a country maid, Jaquenetta. In the final act, the troupe performs a play for the nobles which ends with them mocking it, and the nobles swear to be faithful in love with their ladies. The comedy, exquisite language, and unusual ending make this play a perfect choice for any class. RLS

The Duchess of MalfiThe Duchess of Malfi, a stage play by John Webster, follows the Duchess and her household steward Antonio, Both marry in secret and have children together, while the Duchess's brothers suspect and uncover her secret. The brothers plan horrific events to break up their sister and her lower class husband, creating a mix of greed, forbidden love, rivalry, and insanity that will entertain all classes. RLS
